We can't pretend this is going to go away by itself

I just put this up in my business.

I'm glad Springfield passed its mask ordinance. Greene County has too many new cases for us to pretend COVID-19 is going to go away on its own.

This isn't something I should have to put on my political page.

But we have a president who wants to mask the fact that he is the reason our nation's COVID numbers continue to rise.

What's worse, an entire political party — including our governor — has hitched its wagon to a sleazy populist and has now dedicated their lives to making him look good so he doesn't send angry tweets after them.

Elected officials should listen to experts and make decisions based on that advice, not political considerations. Springfield City Council did that and I am grateful to them for it.

I've seen Ben Franklin's words bandied around a lot in the past few months. I'm going to change them up to make them applicable to today.

"Those who would not give up a little temporary liberty to purchase essential safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
