Meet Karissa

Karissa Varga is a registered nurse and candidate for Missouri’s 37th State House District. Her career has been rooted in service to others, beginning as a direct support professional where she cared for adults with disabilities and advocated for their independence, dignity, and quality of life. Karissa is an active civic leader, serving on the boards of the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation, the South Kansas City Alliance, and Southland Progress. In recognition of her leadership and commitment to public service, she was named Young Democrat of the Year by the Jackson County Democrats and currently serves as Vice Chair of the South Kansas City Democrats.

Drawing on her frontline healthcare experience and years of community advocacy, Karissa is running for office to ensure that families in South Kansas City have access to quality healthcare, strong public schools, affordable housing, and safe neighborhoods. She is committed to being a strong, effective voice for her community in Jefferson City.

Education

Public dollars should be used for public schools. Missouri is 49th in both state funding for public schools and teacher pay. Republicans put forward legislation to take away tax payer dollars from public schools. This legislation will have dire consequences to local districts such as Hickman Mills in South Kansas City.

Reproductive Rights

Abortion and contraceptives should be legal. The government should not intervene in reproductive choices. Missourians voted to restore abortion rights in 2024. Republicans overturned the will of the people, and will put abortion access back on the ballot. We must defend choice of one’s own right to their bodily autonomy.
